Who Can Apply?

The Working Holiday Visa (WHV) is designed for young Aussie and Kiwi travelers who wish to explore Taiwan, but who would prefer more versatility than the standard Tourist Visa offers. The WHV is valid for 12 months and provides a Working Holiday Maker (WHM) with an opportunity to stay in Taiwan for up to 360 days. It allows a WHM to work legally (without applying for a separate work permit), in short-term casual jobs, designed to help subsidise travel expenses. The WHV is not suitable for those travelers looking to find full-time employment or enroll in long-term study.

A Working Holiday Visa entitles you to:

  • Work legally in Taiwan, provided you don’t work with any employer for more than 3 months.
  • Study Chinese language courses at a choice of recognised universities and language centres (for up to 3 months).
  • Stay in Taiwan for 180 days initially, and then extend for another 180 days if you wish. The visa is multiple-entry and valid for one year.

Visa Requirements

The Working Holiday Visa applicant must be able to satisfy the following:

  1. Nationality: Applicants shall be citizens of Australia or New Zealand and shall have not been a previous recipient of a working holiday visa to Taiwan
  2. Purpose: Applicants must prove to the Taiwanese visa office (located within TECO – Taipei Economic and Cultural Office), in their country of citizenship, that their primary intention is to holiday in Taiwan, with employment being an incidental rather than a primary reason for the visit, and will leave Taiwan before the visa expires.
  3. Age: The age of applicants shall be between 18 and 30 years, both inclusive, at the time of application.
  4. Validity of Passport: When submitting an application, the applicant’s passport should be valid for more than 12 months from planned arrival date in Taiwan.
  5. Valid Flight Ticket: Applicants must hold a round trip flight ticket or have financial proof of the capability to purchase it.
  6. Living Expenses: Applicants shall be required to have at least NT$100,000 or an equivalent amount of foreign currency as their living expenses during their stay in Taiwan (approx. A$4,000).
  7. Medical Insurance: Applicants shall have full medical and hospitalization insurance during their stay in Taiwan.
  8. Family members of working holiday visa holders, including spouse and children, shall not apply for visas to Taiwan, as dependents of the working holiday visa holder.
